Is there a word for this?

Is there a word for when someone takes an original phrase and adjusts it slightly to give it a different meaning?

For example, someone may say one form of a word (eg.red) and another may reply with a homophone of that word (read). They might twist it around so it insults the first person.

If you don't get it, see here:

It's a play on words, a pun, taken from the first person and modified by the second

??????????????Is there a word for this?
A homophone is a word that sounds the same but can be spelt differently and means different things. A homonym can be spelt the same (and obviously sound the same) but have different meanings.

Homophones: pail, pale; flea, flee; their, they're, there.

Homonyms: die - to pass away, die - a device to shape, cut or fold metal

or a misunderstanding!!
