Good way to deal with workplace tension?

My coworkers seem to have an issue with me, and as we work in healthcare, we work closely together. The other day a person from another shift said something about how I shouldn't be looking forward to working with them, seeing as I hate all of them.... it's not true and I know the place that I work, rumors spread quickly and words are twisted. I managed to mumble back something about not hating them, but I hate confrontation and being caught off guard. ... what should I do? I'm actually nervous about going to work tonight!Good way to deal with workplace tension?
That's a tough one, and a really uncomfortable situation to be in. Somehow things got started off on the wrong foot and the trick now is to turn it around. You said that you hate confrontation (me too). Does that also mean that you're somewhat shy?

Maybe shyness has been misinterpreted as stand-offishness.

You don't need to go overboard with it, and you don't want to get to where others take advantage of you, but maybe you could try making the first gestures, just a smile and hello, or offering to help out if someone is temporarily swamped. Maybe you could offer to pick up coffee or lunch if you go out, or bring in a plate of cookies to share.

And try not to look for slights where they might not be intended. Sometimes in situations like this we become hyper-sensitive. Just remember that if there's already misunderstanding, this may happen on both sides. If you want a happy work environment, the ball's in your court to try and re-set the mood. Best of luck.
Know what you mean. Don't feed into it, be pleasant to everyone but don't suck up and do your job. If someone confronts you, tell them you want them to go to the supervisor with you to complain. If this gang gets the impression you're easily upset, they'll bully you like crazy. I'm experiencing this and not even in a work place. I hate it.Good way to deal with workplace tension?
Go along smile ask how they are and help otheres where possible or at least offer to help ignore any stupid remarks
I had that problem too.....there were 4 of us in a group of cubicles......all three of them were against me ...... I made the mistake of telling them how much my raise was......it was awful after that for a while, but I just did my work and kept quiet....they said their little "comments", but I'd ignore it........just try and concentrate on your job ,,,,,stay positive..and i'm sure it will all be ok........

lots of luck.......Good way to deal with workplace tension?
Take them cakes or biscuits - always a great way to curry favour ;)
