Would word twisting make a difference?

Considering that a court room is based on a jury of regular people, would twisting your opponents words or using technicalities even have any effect?

I'm taking debate as an elective this year, and I LOVE using technicalities and twisting peoples' words against them. However, technicalities don't work on the ones I usually argue with (my mom, hahaha). So if one average person wouldn't accept a twist or technicality, why would anyone else?Would word twisting make a difference?
Might, might not.

If it's clever, it might get the sympathy of the jury.

Get too clever, (as in try to pull a 'fast one'), and you predjudice them against you,

and your client and his case by association.Would word twisting make a difference?
Beware twisting a word often changes history(of the word at least)!Word play is only for grown ups be careful!!
