Why do people twist what others say?

It really irritates and unnerves me. Why do some people always take ONE word out of your sentence or ONE sentence out of your paragraph and TWIST the meaning of what you wrote or said?

Why is it about taking things out of context that thrills people...is there some sense of enjoyment in doing this to others? Why do people twist what others say?
It's possible it was purposefully 'twisted' but it's also entirely possible that whatever 1 sentence that person thought was important was what stuck out for them.

Consider this:

Eye witnesses rarely ever recall the same details, some remember time, some recall other people in the situation, some recall a criminal's cold eyes...etc. We all tend to focus on or view different factors as 'important'.

So while sometimes things are twisted, sometimes exaggerated but I think more often than not, they are misinterpreted. Why do people twist what others say?
Why do YOU twist others say?! Hehe jk. I think people like to be the first to pass on the word of juicy details, so they take out oooone little detail that "won't hurt anyone". It like the telephone game. I think people like drama. Why do people twist what others say?
To make the gossip juicier, or becuase they forgot certain parts of the discussion and are trying to fill in the blanks.
