I am not saying that there isn't still racism in this country, but when everything is twisted and misconstrued to be racism, does it diminish the cries of real racism? Is the overuse of the word racism causing real racism to be overlooked?
I think it may be causing more actual racism.
First, I would ask you what your definition of "real racism" is? I would say there is plenty of real racism on the part of most races. It also seems to get easier for some people to say that everything is being called racism. There probably is an underlying current of racism in a lot of things that are going on. A lot of mistrust is caused by racism. It seems a lot of people are turning into fanatics over issues that could be better addressed in a more civil manner. Is this overt racism? Is the overuse of the word racism causing real racism to be overlooked?
The problem with racism is that it is fundamentally a spiritual issue. You can pass laws that prohibit discrimination and these should be enforced, but you cannot pass laws that change the heart. Love is a choice! You cannot correct the past. You can improve the present and create a better future. The playing field will never be completely equal. That is utopia. There will always be inequity. The goal is to reduce most barriers; allowing the majority of people to achieve their potential. The individual is also responsible for embracing opportunity and avoiding self-destructive behavior. True racism should be addressed, but every negative encounter is not racism.
Yes it does, words do really have meanings that can't be changed to fit politics. Racism is a nasty, violent, hate filled term. It should be reserved for those who are truly racists or it loses its meaning.
You can even dislike minorities and be prejudiced without going that extra step and being racist. Not that being prejudiced is in any way acceptable, but its not the same as being racist. Is the overuse of the word racism causing real racism to be overlooked?
Last night I heard two Air America twits talking about the 'rude and racist' people protesting about the democrat health care scheme. It was almost unbelievable, except that it was on Air America radio. They said people don't want it because Obama is black and they want him to fail because of his color and that white people overwhelmingly voted for other than Obama, hence, proof of racism.
Then they went on to promote the health care scheme and one of them stated that the guy who was beat up didn't have health insurance and was struggling to pay the emergency room costs of his beating, not once mentioning that the conservative guy was black or that the racist remarks were made by the democrat thugs who beat and kicked him. But they did say he would have benefited from Obama's health care plan, had it been implemented.
Is this what we have to look forward to?
Absolutely. I think you are right it has lessened the meaning of the word and the urgency of the situation. We now live in a society that is so filled with pre conceived opinions and tender subjects that you can no longer speak freely and openly without being labeled a racist or a homophobic or a sexist and so on. You will notice that it is all favorable to minorities. The idea that white male in america are evil is a growing feeling only fueled by these so called civil rights groups.
We shifted from a society that was nation oriented, to a society that is self centered and selfish to now a society that is literally ruled by minorities. All our new laws, amendments and so on are only being created to favor such or such minority. It is no longer a government who cater to all Americans and do what is best for America it is a government that caters to special groups and interests and do what is best for those groups ... in exchange for votes.
Racism is a normal human reaction that will never go away. All have these feelings and it is what they do knowing that they have them is what makes one a better person. The PC generation has made this much worse than it would have been. Know matter what ones says or does someone will always be offended by what is said. It is time we just get over it and stop being so sensitive. Hate does nothing but eat that person alive and the one hated does not even know that he is hated or way he might be. Peace
I don't think half the people out there even know what real racism is anymore. They think a disagreement over something is racist.
Indeed, racism is a heavy word used lightly today.
Absolutely. Most people who throw that word around have no idea what racism is.
Oddly enough, the government promotes and perpetuates racism.
Obama who was supposed to help race relations has only hurt it 1,000 fold.
I agree.
it is also taking away any legitimacy from the religion of political correctness
racism is a crutch PERIOD!!!!!!!!
no
Racism is a made up word to scare white people.
You are absolutely correct. The great divider has done serious damage.
This question is racist!
I doubt it.
You used the word "racism" five times! Don't you think that's a bit much?
